What fair CV screening leaves out: gaps, schools, spelling and AI detectors

Some things on a CV feel informative but measure the wrong thing. HireSieve publishes the list of what it will not score, and the list is enforced by tests.

Career gaps and part-time work

Gaps and part-time spells often reflect caring, illness or study. HireSieve shows them to a person and never counts them against anyone.

School names

Where someone went to school says more about background than ability, so it acts as a proxy for class. HireSieve does not score it.

Spelling and grammar

Unless writing is the job, spelling penalises people writing in a second language. It is left out.

AI-writing detection

HireSieve's documentation notes that AI detectors misfire on about 61% of non-native English writers and show demographic bias. It does not guess whether a CV was written with AI.

• photos, names and social media
• CV length
• job-title plausibility

What it does check

Document integrity. A CV with hidden text, for example, is flagged for a person to look at; see hidden text in CVs.

Explaining your approach to candidates

Candidates increasingly ask how their CV will be assessed. Saying plainly that you do not score gaps, schools, spelling or AI use, and that a person makes every decision, builds trust and can widen your applicant pool. Put a sentence about it in the job advert or the candidate notice.
