Building a CV screening rubric from your job advert
A screening rubric is a short list of what the job needs, each with a weight. It lets you score every CV against the same yardstick.
Start from the advert
Pull the requirements out of the advert you published. If the advert is vague, fix that first; the Braivex job advert template helps.
Write requirements you can evidence
- Good: "Has managed a team of five or more."
- Weak: "Strong leader."
Each requirement should be something a CV line can show.
Set weights that add to 100
Give the most weight to what decides success in the job. In HireSieve, weights must sum to 100 and changing one rebalances the rest, so you always see the trade-off.
Separate must-haves
A legal or safety requirement, such as a licence, is a gate. In HireSieve a missed gate is a "not eligible" label a person can overrule, never a deletion.
Leave proxies out
School names, spelling and career gaps look like merit but act as proxies for class or circumstance. We explain why in what fair screening leaves out.
Use the same rubric at interview with the Braivex interview scoring sheet. Hiring for a multi-site business? Loculens shows which staff customers name in reviews.
A worked example
| Requirement | Weight |
|---|---|
| Has run a till and cashed up | 30 |
| Has worked weekends in retail or hospitality | 25 |
| Has trained or supervised others | 25 |
| Has handled stock deliveries | 20 |
Four requirements, weights adding to 100, each one something a CV line can show. This is an illustration; build yours from your own advert.

Questions
How many requirements should a rubric have?
Enough to cover what decides the job; most fit on one screen.
Do weights have to add to 100?
In HireSieve, yes. It keeps the trade-offs visible.
What is a gate?
A must-have, such as a licence. Missing it gives a label, not a rejection.
